Critiquing Images And Review Writing

The basics of writing a review and critiquing images;
  • CRITICISING - this means criticism, disapproval, distance, discourse, reflection and discussion. From and express a judgement or literary or artistic work. Research practice and knowledge.
  • CRITICISM -  evaluation and interpretation, understanding the possible meanings. How cultural productions relate to other cultural productions = discourse (discussion or debate)
Uninformed Discourse -> Connoisseurship

  • IDIOSYNCRATIC - something in particular to an individual. An individual reaction to something or based upon their taste... why don’t you like it?
  • INFORMED DISCOURSE V’S UNIFORMED DISCOURSE- based on research you get for the review.

To CRITICISE you must INFORM, ELUCIDATE (make clear), EXPLAIN and ENLIGHTEN
Also writing a review it is about WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and HOW
- Who produced the work?
- What are they attempting to say?
- Where are they coming from?
- When was it produced?
- How was the work developed or created?

  • DESCRIBING- interpreting, judging, and they style of the work.
  • INTERPRETATION- compare and contrast, and research.
  • EVALUATING- evaluating there work, concluding the review over all.
  • THEORISING - your own interpretation of the work. point of view.

SUBJECT V’S SUBJECT MATTER.
Subject - whats the image saying?
Subject matter - whats the image of?

Over all you have to be CRITICAL, FACTUAL and got to DATA GATHER.

After we learnt these basics, we went on to look at a review ourselves. We had to pick out the main points and show how he had created his review in this way, using the different techniques we had learnt. We annotated the review here..
