Gregory Crewdson Review

Crewdson as a photographer has used elaborate production sets to create his stunning images. The lighting is a big part of Crewdsons’ images, and uses this as a source of inspiration for him images.
Crewdsons’ image, from the series Twilight Plate 7, is of a man on his knees cutting holes in the floor of his house with light shooting through the holes. The light looks to be coming the room below and the man seems to be trying to hear or look where the light is coming from. He is quietly finding the source of the light, looking intrigued and seems to be in deep thought. He looks focused, trying to figure out what is happening under the floorboards of this house.
This image looks to have a lot of intricate details, not seen at first glance. Crewdson seems to have done this to make us look more into the image, the atmospheric lighting makes us feel a certain way, and this may reflect the photographers’ identity.  Each image from the series has an almost film like quality, with the dramatic sets and use of lighting. Crewdson says how:

‘The Twilight pictures particularly… there’s the photograph itself, which is of this final, beautiful thing, hopefully; and then there’s the process of making the picture, which is very different from the final picture. I think the process, in my mind, is as important as the picture itself.’

Crewsdon takes a lot of effort into his set up, and this is clear in his images. The attention to detail and lighting works so well to create the image he wants.
